Layers of veil-like color are background for bird forms and calligraphy in my monoprints.  It is a challenge to integrate bird forms into abstract shapes and marks.  I’m inspired by finches, juncos, wrens, and swallows peck, hop and flit around my yard and their underlying currents in which they live.  Their gestures add a frenetic quality to the overall flow and form of my work.  In some ways, I see their erratic and capricious movements as an analogy to our own lives.

By trial and error in printmaking, I found that thinned printers’ ink, when poured on a vertical plate, can create transparent color.  Each layer often brings a welcome departure from my initial intention.  What I make in the studio seems to resolve itself some place between my intention and lack of it.  The printing process creates happy surprises.  This is the magic of printmaking.

I teach watercolor which has many issues in common with my monoprints because they both deal with transparent colors.

I am represented by Davidson Galleries in Seattle.
